Christine Truman hurdy gurdies, recorder
Christine is a graduate of Kingston University. 'THE HURD' is very much Christine’s brainchild. Her inspiration is a passion for French dance music and the desire to experiment. She also writes some of the best tunes around! Despite the hours of attention lavished on her hurdies, she still manages to find time to keep the hungry ‘Hurd’ supplied with excellent cakes and puddings. She Christine has 2 concert hurdies (her other babies are Poppy and Louis) made by English maker Chris Eaton. Christine is also a committed runner, she is often seen pounding her way around Mistley where she lives, trying to run off previously consumed cake calories!
Steve Smith guitar, mandolin
Steve is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music and token ‘northerner’ in the band. Having discovered relatively recently, the 'joy of folk', he is excited to find himself at the centre of this new maelstrom of creativity and opportunity. It took Steve several rehearsals to figure out why, his fellow band members were looking at him 'that' way, soon realising it was his unexpected off- beat accompaniments and left-field harmonisations of familiar French dance tunes. When not gigging with 'THE HURD', Steve performs on multiple plucked instruments with a bewildering variety of artists from The London Sinfonietta, Glyndebourne Opera to The Chamber Orchestra of Lapland. He lives in London.
Steve Lock bassoon, soprano saxophone
Steve 'farmer boy' Lock, is at the agricultural hub of 'THE HURD' his organic produce adorns many a pre-rehearsal table. How rehearsals ever get going at all, is a miracle. IN FACT, we often try to meet at a neutral venue, for fear that over eating and drinking, may lead to having to abandon all hope of rehearsing! When not preparing great meals at 'Utopia' Steve loves a game of boules or table tennis - at which he's really rather good! When not gigging with the band, Steve can be found amusing himself with his power tools (that's what he tells us), as one of East Anglia's premier wind instrument repairers. Steve also runs the wind ensemble ‘PUFFIN’. He lives with his honey bees in Stutton, Suffolk.
The Hurd
Since the Hurds inception late in 2008, it soon became apparent that all our diverse experience was going to produce something a little different!
Our line-up alone, of hurdy-gurdy, bassoon and guitar turned a few heads. So THE HURD's unique sound began to take shape.
The Hurd has performed at folk clubs, festivals and dances in and around London and the South East.
In November 2009 the Hurd released their debut CD ‘5 Steps’.
